Abstract
|
The use of information technology (IT) in health care
and biomedical research is growing, yet barriers to effective
use continue. While many researchers have addressed issues
such as cost, system interoperability, security, and workflow
redesign, less effort has been devoted to how to train
and deploy the workforce that will develop and maintain
these systems. Dr. William Hersh is an international leader
in biomedical informatics education, and will address
the competencies required for the health and biomedical
IT workforce. Dr. Hersh will also describe how institutions
around the world are educating this workforce, with particular
insights from his own program at Oregon Health & Science
University.

Biography of Keynote speaker
|
William Hersh, M.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department
of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology at
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland,
Oregon, USA. Dr. Hersh is a leader and innovator in the
medical informatics field both in education and research.
In education, he is Director of Educational
Programs at OHSU, where he has spearheaded efforts to
develop educational programs at the certificate, master’s,
and doctoral levels. He also initiated OHSU’s push into
distance learning for medical informatics, which has enabled
many individuals who were previously unable to seek education
in informatics to now do so. Most recently, he teamed
up with the AMIA leadership to launch the successful 10x10
program that aims to train 10,000 clinicians in informatics
by the year 2010.
Dr. Hersh is also an accomplished researcher,
focusing mainly on the area of information retrieval,
where he has authored over 100 scientific papers.
